Ordering cardboard boxes can be confusing, so we have included the following information to make the process easier. If you are still unsure as to what you require, our experienced sales team will be more than happy to help.
Grades
Corrugated board is available in a number of weights, some stronger than others. A piece of board is basically like a sandwich with two liners – the bread, and fluting in between – the filling. The specification for a piece of board is therefore written as
Outer liner / fluting / inner liner
Examples are 125K/B/125T and 150WTK/BC/150T. The inner and outer liners are usually the same weight of paper to produce a balanced carton. The higher the weight of paper, the stronger the carton it will produce if the fluting remains unchanged. The basic weights used are 125gsm, 150gsm, 200gsm and 300gsm.
The types of paper that we use
Test (T)
This is 100% recycled brown paper usually used for the inner liner. It is the cheapest paper available, so this is the one to choose if you just require a cheap box that hasn’t got to hold much weight.
Testliner 2 (TL2)
This is a brown paper that is a halfway grade between test and kraft. It is partially made of recycled material but looks a lot better than test.
Kraft (K)
This is 100% virgin fibre brown paper and therefore produces the best finish. If you require a printed box, kraft paper provides the best surface to print on. It is also more water resistant than either test or testliner 2, so is better in refrigerated or humid surroundings.
White Topped Test (WTT)
This is test paper that has white paper laminated on top of it
White Topped Kraft (WTK)
This is kraft paper that has white paper laminated on top of it
Oyster (Oys)
This is test based paper that has a mottled white paper laminated on top of it. Useful for a packing line where mucky fingerprints would be evident on a white box! It is also cheaper than white board.
The types of fluting that we use
E flute
Approx 2mm thick – this is a strong yet compact fluting often used for display boxes and other die cuts.
B flute
Approx 3mm thick – this is the most common fluting used for both die cuts, cases, layer pads and fitments.
C flute
Approx 4mm thick – this is stronger than B flute and mainly used for transit cartons.
BC flute (double wall)
Approx 7mm thick – this is a very strong grade usually used for export cartons or for transporting heavy or fragile objects.
